Every Sunday, we have the opportunity to drop spare dollars into buckets on our communion tables. This small gesture is one way we as a church community can support you loving your neighbor well: providing a big check to meet a one-time significant need. It is our hope that this can help spark our imagination to be Jesus’ agents of blessing, service and transformation. This story is just one example of how these fund are used to bless someone outside our church community.
My story is about a young woman I work with. She’s a single mom. She doesn’t receive child support. She makes a small salary working as an advocate for teens. I felt the Spirit move on my heart for this person. It seemed like she could never catch her breath with her finances. Every week, she was hit an unexpected expense. She was charging things to her credit card and taking extra cleaning jobs to provide for her teen. All the while, at work she was one of the best advocates I’ve ever known. She’s dedicated to her community, to her child, and she was just trying to get by.
One day, we were having coffee, and she told me she had no clue how she was going to pay her rent that month. I felt a pull to email Change for A Dollar, and I threw out a number. They got back to me with what they had the ability to give. So I wrote up a card, put the check inside, and asked her to coffee. I slid the card across the table to her, and she started to cry…a lot. She explained that the amount on the check was the exact amount of her rent.
While she doesn’t identify as Christian, she does have a very deep spiritual walk and is trying to connect with God in the ways she knows how. She said that the generosity shown her through Change for a Dollar made her realize that God sees her. In this crazy world where a lot of us are just trying to get by and can feel very invisible, your generosity allowed her to feel seen. When you put money into the (Change for A Dollar) bins, it may feel like just a little pocket change, but it really can add up. I’m proud to be part of a community where we can give back - no strings attached.
Imago Dei Community members can request Change for a Dollar funding for a person or family in need outside of our church community.
